Day 1: Take the Cat’s Back Challenge

Start on a high with a run up this 2100ft high peak in the Black Mountains. Just shy of 5 miles, this circular route leads to a rocky ridge on the border, where you can survey England on the one side and Wales on the other. Whichever direction you look, the views are spectacular. Keep a eye out for red kites, buzzards and kestrels as you run. You may also meet the wild Welsh mountain ponies that like to graze here.

Afterwards,  retreat to The Bulls Head at Craswall for a relaxing drink or well-deserved lunch.

Day 2: Canoe the River Wye

Give your arms a workout on the River Wye. Pick either a half day from Glasbury to Hay on Wye (5.5 miles, 3 hours) or a full day which continues on to Whitney-on-Wye (11 miles, 5 hours). Alternatively, head over to Ross-on-Wye or Symonds Yat to experience a different stretch of the river. Expect thrilling twists, a few rapids and the sheer delight of being on the water.

Local providers such as Celtic Canoes will provide you with all the gear as well as transport from the river to your car. Other providers and suggested routes are available on the Visit Herefordshire canoeing & SUP page.

Day 3: Unleash your Inner Viking

Today you will be perfecting the art of axe throwing at The Viking Games. Test your skills at a range of traditional nordic challenges and see if you can hit the bullseye. Combining skill and accuracy, it’s addictive!

Afterwards, there’s the option to stay on site for paintballing, laser clay shooting or archery. Alternatively test out your skills at HS Activities.

Day 4: Bike the “Porter’s Perfection” Cider Circuit

On your last day, you’ll be pedalling nearly 50 miles around the west of Herefordshire. Along the way you’ll experience dramatic landscapes, punctuated with visits to fantastic artisan cider producers. Prepare for steep climbs, pretty country lanes and the chance to explore ancient country churches and prehistoric stones.

Named after a heritage apple variety, the circuit is one of three cycle routes which visit local cideries. It includes a trip to see our neighbours Ty Gwyn Cider as well as other local favourites such as Gwatkin Cider and Artistraw. After tasting the real stuff, you’ll never see cider in the same way again. Bike hire is available in Hay-on-Wye from Drovers Cycles.
