Visit the
Gardens

Intimate and informal in feel, with beautiful vistas of our historic home, the gardens offer colour throughout the seasons. The roots of our gardens lie in the picturesque landscape style of the early 1800s. The Estate’s Medieval deer park lies beyond, home to some 250 fallow deer and a host of ancient trees.

Our favourite springtime spot! Beneath the canopy of mature trees, stroll amongst the snowdrops, bluebells and the county’s much-loved wild daffodils. Well-established rhododendrons flower from February through to May, accompanied by beautiful azaleas. Connoisseurs will spot many unusual varieties of rhododendron which were planted back in the 1950s by Lt. Commander Jack Lucas-Scudamore. Return in the autumn to enjoy a fiery blaze of colour, courtesy of our maples.

Delight in the walled garden’s herbaceous borders throughout the year, from spring hellebores to autumnal asters. Wander along the grassy paths to take in the colourful collection, featuring geraniums, digitalis, nepeta, rudbekia and a wealth of other fabulous perennials.

Take note of any plants that catch your eye as they are often available for sale in our nursery.

Meander through our vegetable plots which are bejewelled with clematises, roses and sweet peas. Deliciously-scented, these blooms help attract pollinators, whilst being the prettiest plants of our working gardens. Our home-grown produce makes its way to the family kitchen and into many of the cakes served in the Tea Rooms too.

One side of the vegetable garden is bordered by a series of terraced lawns; follow their lead to find a mature apple orchard, underplanted with alliums and tulips.

Dive into Kentchurch’s rich history with a guided tour of the park and gardens with our head gardener. He will share his insights into gardening here, as well as family stories dating back to the early 1800s when the garden was originally developed.

The Deer Park is only open to visitors booked on a tour. A former royal hunting ground, originally belonging to the Knights Templar, it was bought by the family back in 1547. Fallow deer graze here amongst the ancient trees including sweet chestnut, some of the largest field maples in the country and the ‘Jack of Kent’s’ oak tree, one of the largest and oldest of its kind in Britain.
